How to maintain productivity while remote working?

As you know, I’m a keen supporter of all things about change and transformation and the challenge of using technology for everyone’s benefit.

Today during our first Agony Aunts session for TechWeek we were asked for our ideas on measuring and maintaining productivity with remote working. Do we as business owners have to just adjust to the fact that everyone is now walking the dog and doing the laundry while balancing zoom meetings but not working into the small hours?

Productivity is a serious question for NZ Inc and this query enabled me to jump on my soapbox.

At its heart, productivity is always about the people. He tangata he tangata he tangata. In a remote working environment it is not about tracking everything that people do. What’s crucial is people’s time, talent and energy – not where they are sitting.

Management consultant Michael Mankins from Bain & Co sets this out excellently in his book, summarising that we should reach above engaged people to inspired people, as they have more productive outputs. Here is a link to Michael speaking about his theory.

It was great fun and a privilege today to be on the panel of agony aunts helping people solve their tech, scaling and transformation dilemmas.

How do you create trust & psychological safety in organisational change?

Our final session Agony Aunts session at TechWeek 2021 today honed in on some tough questions facing businesses in our tech sector. But the solutions we discussed are relevant for businesses of all shapes and sizes and every industry imaginable.

A key takeaway today was our response to a question about how to create trust and psychological safety during organisational change.we’ve saved a link here for you to check out this short video clip featuring all three Agony Aunts.

On many occasions, we’ve guided teams in a search for protocols to suit their specific culture. My tool for this challenging scenario is to create a charter. We leave no-one behind with the virtual tool and provide an environment to address fears and disruptive elements and really listen, which creates psychological safety.

If you would like to know how to do this, please contact me and I’ll be happy to share this strategy with you.

It has been lovely to be able to respond to people reaching out to us in our Agony Aunts capacity for TechWeek. We all know we have Agony Aunts and Uncles in our network. There are lots of people out there in New Zealand prepared to help other Kiwis to take advantage of being first movers. So don’t hesitate to reach out to us or the mentors in your circle.
